“The forgetfulness of where one left their teeth.”
Someone once described dementia like that.
Reality checked when my grandmother couldn’t remember me, mistaking me for my father. Its confusing at first but at some point you begin to find yourself entering her reality to make the situation more convenient.
Mental Monday is all about exploring different challenges that affect our mental health, with the goal to get more people aware of their mental wellness and starting conversations that lead to happier healthy lives.
Oddly enough, todays is more technical but DEMENTIA is a great place to kick us off…
Now dementia is associated heavily with being forgetful and this forgetfulness can cause confusion of all sorts.
Let’s run through some of those,
1. They forget
2. Because they can’t remember, we add on to their anxiety by stressing them during an interaction
3. Further stress has been added causing confusion, which let’s be honest is a lot to take. You can’t manage being confused for 10 minutes, try the whole day, every day.
It’s already hard forgetting things by yourself all the time, now, other pressures have been added and the mind is refusing to cooperate.
Sometimes it’s not forgetfulness sometimes, its stress forcing the mind shut. However, the outcome is usually the same and putting them under more stress results in a similar shut down.
Now I’m not saying baby someone and not live as the world actually is, with all its pressures and stresses. All I’m saying is as this Monday turns into a Tuesday, we’ll take a look at ourselves and possibly remember to practice more empathy.
Imagine the world is already hard for you, that alone should makes us more patient and understanding. That alone should.
Reminder this Mental Monday; be more patient with both yourself and with those around you.
