Did you bath today?

My mother and I play a game. We’ve been playing my whole life. She stares deeply for a few seconds before asking me, “Did you bathe today?” I hate this game because I’ve never won. One time I just silently quit playing. So I was always bathed to avoid the scolding, because obviously I lied. You never knew it was a game. You didn’t even know we were playing, and yet I lost every time.

So when you tell me you love me, I believe you. Not because things always work out, but because you have poured all your love into me. It’s the benefit of doubt, to always ask the question. To first hear from me, even if this is our hundredth dance. Patiently hoping I lead with honesty. I just realised she never reaches for judgement without giving me a chance.

Maybe that’s all someone needs this holiday season. Just a chance to explain, to start fresh, clean. To start again. So be a little mindful as you interact, don’t snap, just breathe and allow the inclination to pass you. Even the silence to listen is a gift.

As we navigate the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, let’s remember to give each other the gift of understanding. Let’s create spaces where people feel heard, seen, and loved. Where we can start anew, without the weight of past judgements.

In doing so, we might just find that the true spirit of the season is not just about giving and receiving, but about connecting with each other on a deeper level. Wishing you a holiday season filled with warmth, love, and understanding.
