Reading about Superheroes was usually an interesting part of my day growing up. Like most I always wanted to be a hero, the tights and cape too. What does mental health have to do with being a Super, anyway?
Hi and welcome to my blog on Mental health, but really it’s a blog about love and healing hoping my experiences and observations may resonate in some way and we can learn from each other. But ultimately I hope that you may be love, and find happiness, this Mental Monday!
A few things stand out about Superheroes, they come in all shapes and sizes, villains too but also that most times they just become heroes. They aren’t sitting around waiting to be asked to the dance, they just go dance. That bravery is always admired and minus the having super human powers thing, it’s pretty cool when random people go out of their way to help us in our time of need.
I’ve often wondered, what would a Superhero look like in a world where being SUPER just meant being yourself. I say this with the full realisation that, it sometimes feels like we live in such a fake world, so fake we lie even to ourselves just so we can make it through.
Unfortunately we can’t be fake forever, not if we want to be Superheroes. And it’s perfectly fine if the body we go back into the burning build to save first, is ours. It’s great to be hero to others, but its useless and short term if we’re not taking care of ourselves also. We all wonder what our super power can be, we all wonder how we can be of service to others.
Our story is who we are, it is what sets us apart, it is what becomes our power, it becomes our gift and ultimately it becomes a point of identification. To some, it even becomes them. Our story is where everything that defines us is, everything that created us, and everything going before us is already within. Deciding how we wield this power of ourselves determines alot upon our journey.
Notice how in every story told to us, once the main character forgot who they were, they were lost. It mattered not what type of society they came from. It mattered not who got in their way. It only mattered that they knew who they were and never shied away from it. Some go so far as to call it destiny.
The road doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to be ours and fear of voices too scared to jump in the ring but would rather shout from the stands should not faze us either. Because once we fortify our boarders with the actualisation of self awareness, we’ll realise the fear of what others think is nothing compared to the beating we give ourself for not being who we are and want to become.
In the Bible (Matthew 12:22-28) Jesus talks about how a house divided cannot stand. We are our house, our mind and body are both necessary to maintaining a united house and the story we know of ourself and tell ourself, becomes a major part of how we see life and what we can do with our life.
Aligning to our story after listening to people for a long time can be really difficult but it’s not impossible to get out of the cage and become our very own Superheroes. Now at this point I need to make a small disclaimer, I’m not saying you’ll be able to fly, but what I am saying is if you know yourself, you’ll know your problems, you’ll also know or be in search of a cure for your problems.
A superhero is fighting everything that seems to go wrong until they literally have nothing left to fight with, including the air in their lungs.
I’m saying our story is the answer, it’s the truth and it’s the way to gaining the bravery to becoming a superhero, our very own superhero. This however may take years to achieve, sometimes, for some, it almost never happens. Truth be told, everyday we attempt to honour our story, to ourselves, is a day we can walk with our heads high, knowing the goal is always progress and not perfection.
Waking up everyday, happy, content, and excited to be alive because we know who we are and we love who we are regardless of what others may think. That is the Superpower, running into burning buildings, declaring who we are and living our life in accordance with the gifts God has placed upon our hearts only for us.
Now I know all this sounds nice or very terrible but reading all this is great and all but highly unhelpful. Let not my words put you in a fix I suggest a simple exercise we can carry out on our own and if we stay diligent to the exercise for only 60 days we will be able to notice the questions in our life change as some get answered and some are stalled.
In every day make 20 minutes minimum, to spend time alone. By time alone I suggest a note pad and a book. 10 minutes as the day starts and 10 minutes as it ends. Use the time to think, think about our day and set ourself some tasks, then think about our day at the end and gauge how we found our day. If we couldn’t do the tasks, we ask ourself why until we come out with a truthful answer.
For some we will be too lazy, for others the overwhelm may be too much but still I urge us all to brave the storm. For she wears different coats but has the same agenda, to confuse and convince that the effort is pointless. Effort is never pointless, our effort is ours and the point is to get enough momentum from all the effort that we see the change in the world.
Mostly that our life and everything we did was a beacon to others who were lost and saw our beacon as paths crossed and we helped reshape their lives. When we become our own hero, our life leaves a legacy that helps others find their way in life. Our story has the power to change the whole world, we should use it!
I promise this is not how my usual Mental Monday’s go but I got extremely carried away with the prospect of seeing more people unlock their powers that I couldn’t help rumble. But we are the power, our life is a blessing and you don’t have to take my word for it. If you do that simple exercise, and keep doing it once you see results even past the 60 day mark then you will have taken the steps to becoming your own superhero.
Mondays are for mental health, but really mental health is everyday and that’s why we must become our own superhero because everyday someone needs saving and it’s nots every day, that that someone is us. Spread love, be a superhero, and enjoy the start of your week like only you can. Be kind in the world as we are all looking to heal and remember most importantly, spread love.
