MEMEs! SMH

Hours occasionally get spent on social media navigating through the traffic from one meme to another. Memes are usually an intention at humour, at least a majority of them are and for a while they were only done by a chosen few who had the tools to create them.

Because of the world we currently live in, the term meme has a dictionary meaning, crazy to use a word so much without knowing its meaning.

an idea, image, video, etc. that is spread very quickly on the internet

Here is the double edged sword I wield delicately, for every slash tends to cut and so here goes, I really don’t like memes. Well not all memes, but a huge majority of memes I find are soaked in hate trying to pass of as humour.

Maybe I lack the necessary sense of humour for most memes and I guess that can’t be helped but a transition has occurred in our society. With the aid of social media and tools that make creating memes easy, it has become a norm to create a meme for all occasions to get “HAHAs”.

Social media has the added glow of animosity rendered by simply posting an image or making a comment and not having to deal with the consequences of real world repercussions. All you do is press send and someone else’s entire day gets shuttered, maybe why mental illness is on the rise in our society.

I have nothing against humour, but in a world where people require more love than hate or ridicule a meme can change the entire outlook of someone’s day. Its short, its catchy and its highly relatable, not to mention it can get shared thousands of times in an instant.

The answer I stumble upon is usually always, “people need to develop thick skin” but why can’t we be more understanding, more loving and more interested in being of help in our communities?

Kevin Hart said it best, “Laugh at my pain” he is open enough to make jokes about his life because above all else humour especially about ourselves is a strength beyond measure. Honestly memes are just one aspect picked on as I stumbled on a meme which was more cringe worthy than funny.

As a new week begins I would like to encourage more actions based on love for ourselves firstly as this will then lead to passing the love on to those deserving but even to those we feel are not deserving as love is more about you than it is about the other person. May we all be guided to action through the beauty of love
