It’s been 61 years. Zambia is legit a grandparent that is currently refusing to change. An old dog stubbornly ignoring new tricks. And so maybe for this new year, the one gift we can give our nation and ourselves is the simple, brutal opportunity of change.
It starts on your street. See that litter? Don’t add it to the bin already passing for a drainage ditch. Take it home and dispose of it properly. Your city’s health is your health.
Stop building those drains that hold water rather than redirect it away. Please and thank you.
And we have to communicate better. Not just in our homes, but in our neighbourhoods. Let’s use WhatsApp to host neighbour groups that encourage community and improve our streets through team work.
Let’s encourage the critical thinking that fosters a better nation.
I’m not trying to reach for the stars here, just slightly further. So start small.
Start by making your bed.
Start by helping round the house.
Start by being responsible for yourself.
Start by listening to the voice in your head that wants you to do the hard thing and progress.
They say it’s all about the journey because that’s where the stories, experiences and bonds that shape us are forged.
Rather than happy independence, I’ll say happy birthday. You’re old enough now, know this. This is your country. You are royalty.
Go be you fully.
