Want to be heard instead of argued with? It’s all in the phrasing. 3 switches to make today:
1:
❌ STOP SAYING:”You never clean your room!”
✅ START SAYING:”I see your room is messy. What’s going on?”
Why it works:”Never” is an accusation. A neutral observation and a question opens a conversation.
2:
❌ STOP SAYING:”That’s a stupid idea.”
✅ START SAYING:”Help me understand your thinking on that.”
Why it works:It attacks the idea, not the person. It shows curiosity instead of judgment.
3:
❌ STOP SAYING:”We need to talk.” (The four most dreaded words)
✅ START SAYING:”I’d like to chat about the issue when you have some time. Is after dinner good?”
Why it works:It’s specific and gives the other person psychological preparation and control. It’s an invitation, not an ambush.
The goal isn’t to win the conversation;it’s to understand and be understood. That’s where the real connection happens.
