All Hail, Fred Katel

I saw the poster in our work group and thought nothing more of who was coming for the ‘Cypher Show’ until the young man walked into our studios and I immediately recognised the young man as one of my brothers. I hadn’t heard the music and naturally was excited or what would be on offer.

Edgar’s Na Salaula is the first offering off his self titled LP Kateule’ and its a fitting introduction to understanding what kind of artist you have given your ear to. The hook is simple as he seamlessly flows in English, Nyanja, and Bemba, “Now hit me with that real talk” calm enough to ‘walk the talk in every language’. This song opens up like a J Cole song was sampled and I feel he did justice.

For the first offering by this new wave artist there is an element of conscious thought laced with personal history and introspection from his early days. Speaking on his high school experience with all the regrets it comes with in ‘High School ft Arsenic’.

The project contains gems for anyone who appreciates the come-up from new artists and I think with more projects and more buzz from the audience only the sky can delegate how far he will get as far as this dream of his goes.

My favourite line in the whole project comes from ‘Its Aright’ where he says “She was born again but I was born a gangster” He speaks on his relationship with a certain unnamed lady and he keeps it as raw and as honest as an excluded player with a story to tell.

The production can definitely be improved upon but if this is his first offering then one can only wonder with a pleasant smile what the future holds for this starry eyed rapper. Listen to the project on Audiomack and leave a comment with your thoughts.
